Overview

Bristol Jobs set out to become the definitive recruitment resource for the Bristol and South West region. In a market dominated by national job boards with massive advertising budgets, the challenge was to build something focused enough and technically sharp enough to compete on local relevance. We were brought in to create a platform from scratch that would own the regional search space and deliver genuine value to local employers and job seekers alike.

The Challenge

National job boards serve a broad audience, but that breadth comes at a cost. Local employers in Bristol were paying premium rates to advertise on platforms where their vacancies sat alongside thousands of irrelevant listings from across the country. Candidates searching for work in the South West had to wade through noise to find genuinely local opportunities. There was a clear gap in the market for a well-built, regionally focused alternative.

The technical challenge was twofold. First, we needed to build a platform that could rank highly in organic search results for Bristol-area job queries, competing head-on with sites that had years of domain authority. Second, the user experience had to be clean and fast, particularly on mobile devices, where the majority of job searches now begin.

What We Built

The platform was developed in ASP.NET with C# and SQL Server, with Elastic Search powering the job listing discovery layer. We paid particular attention to several areas:

• SEO architecture — every listing page, category page, and location page was built with structured data, clean URLs, and server-rendered content designed to rank well in search engines
• Mobile-first responsive design ensuring the full job search and application workflow performed well on phones and tablets
• Employer self-service tools allowing local businesses to post vacancies, manage applications, and purchase featured listings without needing to phone anyone
• Automated job alerts delivering personalised email notifications to registered candidates when new local roles matching their criteria were posted

Results

Bristol Jobs achieved strong regional search rankings within months of launch, consistently appearing on the first page for key Bristol employment search terms. Hundreds of local employers signed up during the first year, drawn by the platform’s local focus and competitive pricing compared to the nationals.

The mobile-optimised experience proved especially important. Analytics showed that over sixty percent of traffic came from mobile devices, and the streamlined application process kept conversion rates healthy. For a regional platform competing against household names, the results speak for themselves.
